Mouse terms explained

DPI (dots per inch)
A measure of mouse sensitivity — the higher the value, the faster the cursor moves. Gamers commonly use 400–1600 DPI, while designers or high-resolution users may prefer more.
Polling rate
How many times per second the mouse reports its position, in Hz. 1000 Hz is the mainstream today; high-end models reach 4000–8000 Hz. A higher rate means smoother movement and lower input latency.
Switch (microswitch)
The key mechanical part under each button that governs click feel, lifespan and whether double-clicks occur. Common brands include Omron, Kailh and TTC.
LOD (lift-off distance)
The maximum height at which the mouse still tracks movement. Lower is better — it stops the cursor from drifting when you lift the mouse.
Sensor
The “eye” of the mouse that reads movement on the surface. Top optical sensors include the PixArt PAW3950, Focus Pro 30K and similar.
IPS (inches per second)
The fastest movement speed the sensor can track, in inches per second. Higher IPS means fewer dropped frames during fast flicks in FPS games.

Troubleshooting

One click fires twice

Symptom: one click triggers two, easily causing accidental drags or closing a window.

How to fix it:

  1. Use the double-click test to confirm whether the trigger is abnormal.
  2. As a stopgap, lower the system “double-click speed” in the mouse settings.
  3. Spray electronics contact cleaner into the switch gap and rapid-fire it a few dozen times to clear oxidation.
  4. Long-term: replace the switch, or the whole mouse.

Button dead / not sensitive

Symptom: a key presses with no response, or needs a lot of force to fire.

How to fix it:

  1. Usually oxidation on the contacts or a poor solder joint.
  2. Try spraying in contact cleaner and clicking rapidly several times.
  3. If that fails, the switch or mouse needs replacing.

Wheel skipping / reversed scroll

Symptom: the wheel stutters, jumps or scrolls the wrong way.

How to fix it:

  1. Usually dust or wear inside the wheel encoder.
  2. Take the mouse apart to clean the encoder, or replace the encoder to fix it.

Drag releases unexpectedly

Symptom: a drag while holding the left button cuts out in the middle for no reason.

How to fix it:

  1. The left switch lacks the holding force to stay engaged during a sustained press.
  2. This is a sign the switch is badly aged — best to replace it.

Mouse care

Daily care

Wipe the shell, seams and wheel with a dry cloth or a slightly damp cotton swab regularly, so grime does not build up and hurt feel and response.

Sensor lens

Dust or hair on the sensor lens under the mouse causes tracking jumps — clean it with a cotton swab or canned air from time to time.

Mousepad upkeep

A dirty or worn mousepad lowers tracking accuracy — clean it regularly or replace it when needed.

Keep liquids away

Liquid seeping into the mouse can ruin the switch and PCB — keep it well away from water cups.

Wireless battery

Switch off a wireless mouse you won’t use for a while, or lower its polling rate, to stretch battery life.

Frequently asked questions

The page goes back when I test the side buttons — how do I fix it?

Make sure the cursor is inside the test area (the gray mouse graphic) before clicking — that region disables the browser’s back/forward shortcuts. If it still happens, try Chrome.

Why does my wheel get no response?

Make sure you scroll inside the test area. If the page still ignores it, the wheel encoder may be faulty or the browser incompatible (Chrome or Edge recommended).

Is this mouse tester paid?

Completely free, nothing to install — open a browser any time and check the health of your mouse.

Can I use it on a phone or tablet?

If a mouse is connected via OTG or Bluetooth you can navigate to this page and test. Mobile input works differently, though, so some side buttons may not be recognized due to system limits.

Side buttons fine here but dead in games — why?

The hardware is fine. In-game failures usually come from wrong bindings in the game or missing official drivers — check your in-game button map.
